Cutting data latency with satellite edge computing
Fujitsu and Yamaguchi University have shown that processing data directly on satellites can cut analysis time from hours to minutes. Instead of sending large volumes of raw imagery down to Earth for later processing, their orbital edge computing setup runs the key algorithms in space and transmits only the refined results.
For sectors that rely on satellite images—such as disaster response, agriculture, and infrastructure monitoring—this approach reduces the delay between capturing a picture and acting on it. The trial points to a future where satellites do more of the computing themselves, easing pressure on ground stations and speeding up access to useful information.
